Functional Movement Systems and the
Selective Functional Movement Assessment (FMS/SFMA)

The Functional Movement Systems and the
Selective Functional Movement Assessment (FMS/SFMA) are comprised of two components:

  1. The Functional Movement Screen (FMS)
The FMS is a ranking and grading system that documents movement patterns that are key to normal function. It is useful in identifying movement pattern asymmetry and/or limitation.
  2. Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA)
The SFMA is a series of 7 full-body movement tests designed to assess fundamental patterns of movement, such as bending and squatting, in those with known musculoskeletal pain. SFMA is a diagnostic tool that uses movement to provoke symptoms and demonstrate limitations and dysfunctions.

FMS/SFMA are very useful and accurate screening tools designed to assess basic and vital movement in the non-painful, acute and chronic pain populations. These skills will help to fill the gap between pre-participation physicals and performance/skill testing. They are widely use by the NFL, MLB and US Military.
